 Still, whilst going through old photos, I even came upon a few that were taken on New Years Eve this year. We had only just moved house and it was too cold to go outside so we took them from home. I can remember we were in bed about an hour later so pooped after moving and unpacking again.

As a fan of dogs I am not really one to like fireworks, but they are pretty to photograph, just not really that pretty to watch. I think I'd rather the money spent on solar powered lights to decorate parts of the city on a permanent basis, but who am I to ask? Hania? Please.....

Sometimes you just have to try some experimentation with a snap and drag moment.

New Years blast

So it is a new year already, then again does it really matter. Life goes on, the world rotates, the sun rises and sets the same as before, as it has done for millions of years. So what can a new number bring us?

Of course, using the Gregorian Calendar, which is the most common we take this year to be 2013, of this, most of us focus on the later two numbers, 13.

13 is considered unlucky in many cultures. With the exception of Italy. Italians, except those in Campania, think that 13 is a lucky number.

I recently returned from a holiday in Rome, coincidence? I think not.

Also, traditionally to prove that bakers weren't cheating their customers, they created a thing called a baker's dozen, which is 13. One extra showing one was not ripping off their customers. I love to bake, and bake often. Coincidence, I think not.

So along with these undeniable facts, I propose this will be a great year. May it be for you all too.

To celebrate I made some pumpkin pasta sheets for a vegetarian lasagne (Italian food, another coincidence!)

Then, after finishing that, a gingerbread based apple tart, and a lovely bottle of New Zealand sparkling sauvignon blanc brut NV, we watched a couple of movies, including the excellent "Angels Share" which caused us to drink some single malt. We followed this by watching people burn their cash in the form of fireworks. An idea that I will never understand.

Happy, prosperous, and fantastic New Gregorian Year, people. I hope the hangovers are subsiding nicely.

New Years Eve - The Numbers Keep Rolling On

Another one bites the dust. So 2010 went out with..... well, a bang, actually, many bangs. This year we couldn't see the city centre display from our apartment, but the locals certainly gave us a great display and even a few close encounters of the exploding kind. One nearly coming in the window while I was photographing.

Things started well with a Mexican meal, and a bottle of cava. The beans, guacomole, tortilla and appled pork mince all went down well. Then we retired to watch a couple of movies, until the exploding finale of 2010.
It all started relatively calm.
There were the odd explosions earlier than midnight, I am expecting mostly for the kiddies who would otherwise fall asleep.
Then as it got darker and darker you think maybe it was some bigger kids who weren't able to wait the couple of hours till everyone else was primed.
But then just when you thought people had used up their fireworks too early.....
It goes nuts.
This one was a little scary, it was right next to the window.
It gradually gets more and more cloudy with smoke from the fireworks.
Then you try to make a cool effect when the tripod gets loose.
Out the other balcony we see some nice stuff too.
Then when it came to New Years Day it was all about fresh and new.... snow that is.
